'Irreparable loss': Sonia Gandhi writes to Congress MP’s wife to condole his demise

By India Today Web Desk: Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday condoled the death of party's Jalandhar MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary, who died earlier in the day after suffering a cardiac arrest during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and wrote to the politician's wife condoling his demise.

In her letter to Kamaljit Kaur, Sonia Gandhi termed the death of the party MP an "irreparable loss".

"In this hour of grief, I express my heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family. I can understand the pain you and your family is going through. It is an irreparable loss for all of us," the letter read.

Sonia Gandhi, in her letter, also cited the Congress leader’s contribution to the party and society.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the demise Santokh Singh Chaudhary and said that he will be remembered for his efforts to serve the people of Punjab.

"Pained by the passing away of MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary Ji. He will be remembered for his efforts to serve the people of Punjab," Modi said in a tweet.

Congress MP from Jalandhar Chaudhary Santokh Singh died during Bharat Jodo Yatra on Saturday morning in Punjab’s Phillaur. He was walking along with Rahul Gandhi in the yatra when he suddenly fell unwell as his heartbeat increased.

The Congress leader was taken to Phagwara’s Virk hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Rahul Gandhi left Bharat Jodo Yatra and reached the hospital after receiving the news. The yatra has been suspended for the day.

Meanwhile, Bharat Jodo Yatra commenced on September 7 last year from Kanyakumari and will culminate on January 30 in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar.
